Approaching its 10-year anniversary, the Honcho Campout commissioned a 5-part audio documentary podcast series recorded at the 2022 and 2023 editions of the festival.
Produced by Jacob Sperber, the series is part of an ongoing archival project funded by Honcho Campout. The doc series also served to capture the Queer Fam Fund, an initiative founded by the festival centered on Black, Indigenous, people of color and people of Trans experience.

What does queer raving on 250 acres of land in the heart of the red-pilled, Appalachian woods sound like? From the rigging of speaker systems to taking naked group showers, ‘Camp Cast’ is a 5-part audio series narrativizing the beautiful chaos of one of America’s most beloved weeklong LGBTQIA+ music festivals. Threaded within field recordings of the surrounding wildlife and dusty, bass-heavy dancefloors, the series unpacks what it means to be queer in nature, and all that bubbles up in the rugged outdoors for systemically policed bodies.
As an event dedicated to audiophiles and music enthusiasts, the Honcho crew has always felt that an audio/still-photo over video approach is best for documenting Campout. An audio archive helps us to preserve some privacy for campers, as we create a sharable record of the nearly decade-running queer gathering for generations to come. Throughout ‘Camp Cast,’ you’ll not only hear the voices and ambient sounds collected specifically for this project, but also examples of the rigorous audio collection we’ve been doing for all of Campout's DJ sets and lectures.
